Stereoselective synthesis of biodegradable polymers by salen-type metal catalysts

Biodegradable polymers are a promising sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based and have attracted recent extensive research interest due their potential environmental friendliness sustainability. Among them, aliphatic polyesters polycarbonates the most extensively studied ones. The metal-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters copolymerization (ROCOP) epoxides with anhydrides or CO2 often considered be classic efficient methods synthesize stereoregular polymers. Moreover, versatile salen-type metal complexes been used prepare almost all types biodegradable excellent stereoselectivity control. Hence, this review focuses on stereoselective synthesis by catalysts developed in last decade. Aliphatic from ROP esters, ROCOP anhydrides, carbonylative epoxides, as well poly(thio)carbonate COS discussed detail. This highlights mechanisms, catalyst characteristics, factors controlling each reaction, aiming provide general rules for future design catalysts.
